Currently, I spend some time trying to get a grasp on the Authenticated Transfer protocol (ATproto) and it's surrounding ecosystem. It seems elegantly designed and promising for a better digital social future. I believe this is important for our kids. Here are a few things I’ve discovered so far:

Readings

Internet Handle
Every time you sign up for a new social app, you have to rush to claim your username. If someone else got there first, too bad. And that username only works on that one app anyway.

Protocols, Not Platforms: A Technological Approach to Free Speech
What is clear is that there is no simple solution to these challenges, and most of the ones that are normally presented tend not to deal with the reality of the problems or to understand the technical and societal challenges that likely make them impossible.

A complete guide to Bluesky 🦋
I've decided to write down some of the tips & tricks that I often give to friends when I send them an invite code, or the advice and answers that I sometimes give to people that I find in some feed asking about things. This of course got much longer than I planned 😅

Open Social — overreacted
The protocol is the API.

we can just do things - underreacted
7 days later and we have some results from the experiment. When we demote popular posts we see: - 8.26% fewer "show less like this" (3340 -> 3064) - 0.24% more posts in For You were liked (242438 -> 243024) - 2.43% more feed loads (438867 -> 449537) Per user and per request metrics:

it's a self-contained ecosystem

the sad wojak cycle meme with four phases:

- article: bluesky is dying. here’s why
- bluesky users: no it’s not; this article sucks. here’s why
- more bluesky users click into the article
- editor: wow this bluesky article is doing numbers. we should write more of these

The core of the Atmosphere is using the PDS to store user's records, just like desktop apps use the filesystem. Desktop apps interoperate using files. Atmosphere apps interoperate using repo records. That's the ethos that I highly doubt will ever change.

imagine!

My guess is that soon, it will be possible to store and access private content in a PDS:

Bluesky will succeed because it created an “everything ecosystem” instead of an “everything app”

The Atmosphere is a new open network. The features: - Your account works on all atmosphere apps - You can switch to a new provider with no fuss - Easy to make your own apps on it - Works great with personal websites And, Bluesky is an atmosphere app.

It's an account for Atmosphere apps. It's not a "handle" for the whole "internet". It's not a "Bluesky" account, a lot of us don't host our account there, and hopefully less will over time. Atmosphere came from the community, we build as a community. Don't overcomplicate it. Atmosphere Account.
